To make this intricate work of metal art, artisans of Comite Artisanal Haitien clean 55-gallon steel oil drums, cut them open, pound them flat, and then mark designs with chalk. They cut through the metal using a chisel to achieve their locally-inspired designs. It is intensely physical artwork. This cut metalwork from Croix des Bouquets, a small village outside Port-au-Prince, is among Haiti’s most original heritage art forms. The tradition began in the early 1930s with Georges Liataud’s imaginative cemetery crosses crafted from this recycled metal.
